About the Book

A comprehensive Anne Frank House Guide telling the story of Anne Frank and her daily life in the secret annex

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Amsterdam, getting more than 1.2 million visitors a year: the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht. A museum you should definitely see when you are in Amsterdam (Holland). Discover the secret annex behind the bookcase where Anne Frank, the 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family lived for 2 years, and where she wrote the now famous Anne Frank diaries.

The first floor of the canal house, of which the entrance was hidden behind a movable bookcase, was the hiding place of Anne Frank, who went into hiding with family and other Jewish people from Amsterdam during the Second World War in an attempt to escape deportation by the Nazis.

Anne Frank House Amsterdam by Marko Kassenaar is a terrific guide book for any visitor to the Anne Frank House and Museum. For myself, having been to this historic site, this book enhances the experience. While other guide books give general highlights on this iconic museum, Kassenaar’s guide book is clear and concise. More than that, it gives an informative history of the Frank family, the house itself, daily life for the inhabitants of the “secret annex” as well as what happened to Anne and her family when they were betrayed. The list of contents is very helpful as well. Anne Frank House Amsterdam by Marko Kassenaar provides practical information such as museum hours, advice on buying tickets, as well as what to expect once you get to Anne Frank House. I have read Anne’s diary and have visited the house itself. Kassenaar’s book will give you a good foundation to appreciate your experience even more deeply. The photos in Anne Frank House Amsterdam complement the information. I rate this book a must-read if you wish to explore the museum or simply want to know more information about Anne Frank. Included in this book is information on other museums in Amsterdam including The Royal Palace and Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

I think this book, albeit very brief, is a great introduction not only to this important museum, and also a great book to read with your kids. The book includes family history, great images, info on the surrounding neighborhood and notes on the historical context. The book reminds us of why Anne Frank is an important figure and an inspiration to us all, even if at the cost of great tragedy.

This was a simple, informative story that gave background knowledge about Anne Frank. Perfect for my elementary age children to read before we visit the museum in spring.
