May-May Meijer seemed to have an idyllic life: a good job at a university, a devoted husband, a loving child and ambitions to get involved in politics. The life that she worked so hard for would be plunged into chaos when she was forced to battle with schizophrenia. With Inner Voices Meijer tells the story of her psychotic episode with refreshing candour and heartfelt passion. Though at times dark and intense, it’s an inspiring account of one woman’s fight against a disease that threatened to take everything from her and it offers readers an unrivalled opportunity to glimpse into a mind fighting itself.

Required reading for family and friends of people suffering from psychosis An interesting book, which can enlighten the readers about psychosis. This autobiography gives a general yet concrete view -from the inside perspective- about the stages of psychosis. Specifically, it explains how it all begun and how May-May finally manages to recover. It entails a descriptive journey through Psychosis and Schizophrenia, full of things that happened to her during the whole process, from discovering that she suffers from it to how she finally realised and faced it. After reading some of these pages, you can almost hear her inner voices referring to the secret service! It is certainly an easy to read book that gives an insight on mental health issues. In my opinion, after having read this book, not only will you gain more knowledge on psychosis but you will also be able to understand how people who suffer from it think, and become more familiar with the way you should face such situations. In general, a good book, especially for those interested in mental health issues.

I bought the Kindle version of the book because I have had psychotic episodes and wanted to compare my experience with someone else's. May-May explains very well how the psychotic mind works and I feel less 'mad' knowing that I'm not the only one to have 'strange' experiences. It is a very real, detailed account of her inner life and struggles, of how Western psychiatry sees mental illness (something to be eradicated rather than understood). I was heart-broken by the loss of her family life and her job. I was angered by the despotic ways of Western psychiatry who locked her up, drugged her up by force and kept her prisoner, in agreement with her family who wanted 'the best' for her, the best according to them of course! I am glad I never disclosed my experiences to mental health professionals. Her sense of isolation and depression is something I can relate to, as is her spiritual experiences. Thank God I read the books of Stan Grof about psychosis as spiritual emergence. I hope May-May writes more about her conversations with Christ one day and that she will be honoured rather than judged.

A book for all those who want to learn how psychosis can be a process of finding meaning and the way towards a meaningful life.
