About the Book

This true story begins when war breaks out. Hetty and  Fritz have not yet met. Following Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and the German occupation of the Netherlands, armed soldiers appear on every street in Amsterdam.

Through the spread of propaganda and increasing restrictions, the Nazis round up and isolate Jews. They are forced to relinquish everything, including their homes, bank accounts, and citizenship. Family and friends start disappearing.

When single women like Hetty get an official  summons to relocate, Fritz finds a clever way to prevent her deportation. They are soon abducted during a night raid, enslaved, separated, and starved. After being subjected to atrocities in numerous camps, including Auschwitz, they manage to keep a private vow to one another, and stay alive to tell the world of the horrors and wonders of survival as they desperately search for one another.
