An Impossible Promise tells the extraordinary true story of Misha Kopiec, a Polish-Jewish Army officer, Auschwitz survivor, and Nazi hunter, through the voice of his firstborn son, Michael. Drawing on Misha's firsthand testimony, preserved in the archives of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, as well as the stories he told his son, Michael recounts his father's journey through the Rzeszow ghetto, Szebnie, Auschwitz, Fürstengrube, the Death March, and the desperate jump from a moving train. Every person, place, date, and event has been meticulously verified against the historical record. Unlike many Holocaust accounts, the perpetrators, including Nazi commandants and guards, are identified by name. After the war, Misha becomes an NKVD operative hunting Nazi war criminals while searching displaced-persons camps for Liza, the 16-year-old orphan he married in the ghetto and promised to find if they survived. This is not a novel. It is a Holocaust true story grounded in a survivor's firsthand testimony, and above all, a love story about a promise made in the darkest of times and kept against all odds. An Impossible Promise is the second volume of Michael Kopiec's account of his father's life. Together with The Outrage, it forms a six-year journey beginning on September 1, 1939, and ending decades later in a Long Island diner, where Misha finally entrusts his legacy to his son.
