As he witnessed and experienced the increasing persecution of Jews, the turning point came in November of 1938 when Kristallnacht, the “Night of Broken Glass,” made it clear that he and his family had to escape or perish. Ernest mysteriously found himself on a list of almost 10,000 mostly Jewish children, from infants to teenagers, who were rescued through the British government-supported Kindertransport. Not knowing whether he would ever see his family again, Ernst said goodbye. The children traveled with chaperones, each allowed only one suitcase, and arrived in a strange land, uncertain of what the future held. Ernest’s story is one of luck, resilience and resolve. When he was old enough, he joined the British Army, became an elite Coldstream Guard, and was determined to fight back against the forces that had taken away his childhood, his home and family.
